Mayra Mendoza, mayor of Quilmes, announced in the last few hours that she will be operated on for a benign tumor in her neck. "I want to tell my neighbors in Quilmes that tomorrow, Thursday, I will have surgery to remove a pleomorphic adenoma of the left parotid gland," wrote the leader of the Frente de Todos. "I will be recovering for a few days to return to work with the love, will and energy of always." In addition, the municipality reported that Mendoza will be attended by Pedro Saco,a professional of extensive experience who also operated on Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in 2012.
What is a pleomorphic adenoma
"Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign neoplasm and is the most common tumor of those derived from the tissues that form salivary glands,"explains the medical publication Medigraphic. According to a study published in the journal of biomedicine, the signs and symptoms that suggest the existence of a pleomorphic adenoma (PA) are nonspecific. When they are located in the parotid, as is the case of Mendoza, in general, "separate and raise the pavilion of the ear and dissatist the skin, the compression of the facial nerve sometimes causes pain".
According to a classification of the World Health Organization (WHO), there are more than 30 histological varieties of neoplasms of the parotid gland. Most benign salivary gland tumors appear in this area: according to the medical information portal MSD,"about 85% of salivary gland tumors appear in the parotid glands, followed by the submandibular and minor salivary glands and about 1% in the sublingual glands." According to the publication, 75 to 80% of tumors "are benign, slow-growing, mobile, painful, generally as solitary nodules below the skin or mucosa. Sometimes, when they are cystic, they are soft, but more often they are firm."
The intervention, according to the municipality, will be carried out in a private hospital in Pilar, because that is where Saco, a specialist in neck and head, attends. The Santa Fe surgeon serves as associate director of the Department of Surgery and head of the Head and Neck section of the Austral University Hospital.
After receiving his medical degree, Saco did his residency at the Ramos Mejia Hospital and specialized in head and neck oncological surgery at the Roffo Institute. In addition, he trained in the United States, training in institutions dedicated to cancer treatment in Houston and New York. The professional has been practicing medicine for 36 years and is also president of the Argentine Academy of Surgery since last year.
