With the 4th overall pick, the Boston Red Sox have selected Marcelo Mayer, a shortstop out of Eastlake High School.
Mayer, perhaps the best five-tool prep shortstop in a draft that is particularly saturated with them, has stood out of the very beginning. Standing 6-foot-3 at only 18-years old, the left-handed hitter already has a frame and athleticism fitting for the big leagues.
MLB Pipeline has graded Mayer’s hitting at 60, based on the traditional 20-80 scouting scale. That’s a tremendous ranking when you consider only one other player in this year’s draft class was scored a 60, the highest rank given this year. Scouts have noted his baseball IQ, and how he moves very naturally around the field and he’s as strong defensively as he is offensively. This perfect balance has garnered comparisons to Corey Seager and Carlos Correa.
Committing to USC his senior year, Mayer’s left Eastlake High School with a bang, raking a monstrous .392 batting average, with 45 RBIs and 14 homers. He also hit a grand slam in his final high school at bat, which just screams cinematic baseball movie moment right there.
Right now, the best area Mayer can improve upon is his speed on the bases, but given enough time to grow and mature, that shouldn’t be an issue for this Swiss Army knife of a draft pick.
Mayer’s high school has a history of greatness, also producing five-time All Star Adrian González and more recently, Keoni Cavaco, the 13th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.
