After his eighth-round victory against Lorenzo Sonego at Wimbledon, Roger Federer was particularly pleased with the support of the audience. After the match, the eight-time Wimbledon winner thought back to his triumphs, which would have felt like hollow victories for him without fans: "Of course I would have been Wimbledon winner, but it wouldn't have felt the same. That's why I'm so happy that the audience is back. I hope it stays that way."
So far, the 39-year-old had almost been spared from playing in front of empty stands due to his knee injury last year. Only his third-round victory at this year's French Open had taken place without an audience. That's why Federer is pleased that more and more fans are now being admitted in London after the 50 percent occupancy rate at the beginning. "To be honest, it almost felt like a hundred percent, because the fans here at Wimbledon do such a great job to make us feel so special," the Swiss was full of praise.
