Lorde Reckons With Fame, Plays the Part of Cult Leader on Solar Power

Last year, Lorde made a pilgrimage to Antarctica, eager, it seemed, to learn about the climate crisis firsthand. Her journey led many to believe that the 24-year-old’s highly anticipated third album would arrive in the form of a real life Sick Sad World. Instead, Lorde appears sun-kissed and enlightened on Solar Power, released Friday. “Come on and let the bliss begin,” she signals to listeners, a sentiment that sounds like it should come from a SoulCycle instructor or new age cult leader rather than a pop star, on the album’s title track. Four years after 2017’s Melodrama, she’s returned: No shoes, no shirt, no impending doom.

After the success of that previous album, Lorde returned home to Auckland, her own almost fictionally perfect oasis, and logged off, (“Can you reach me? No, you can’t” one lyric on Solar Power declares). The time spent away seems to have ushered her into a new era, one centered around the pursuit of eternal optimism. It’s a compelling transition, since she spent most of her adolescence soundtracking the blows of coming of age. On Solar Power, Lorde pauses to take a deep breath. Much of the tension that she’s built in her previous two albums finds release here. In a sigh of relief on “Stoned at the Nail Salon,” she sings, “Well, my hot blood’s been burnin’ for so many summers now, It’s time to cool it down, wherever that leads.”

Ultimately, it’s hard to say where exactly Solar Power goes. The album’s 12 tracks recount everything from fleeing Hollywood, like on the opening track, “The Path” in which Lorde confesses to “having nightmares from the camera flash” to winning Song of the Year at the 2014 Grammys before bidding farewell to classic rockstar fare: bottles, models, hotels, and jets. During the 43-plus minutes that make up Solar Power, Lorde toes the line between reveling in her past self and arriving at this new season of her life. “Now the cherry black lipstick’s gathering dust in a drawer / I don’t need her anymore / ‘cause I got this power,” she insists on “Oceanic Feeling,” referencing the dark pout that was long considered her signature look. On “The Man With the Axe,” Lorde criticizes her younger self, crooning, “I thought I was a genius, but now I’m twenty-two / And it’s startin’ to feel like all I know how to do is put on a suit and take it away.” It’s an honest admission about what celebrity has done to her psyche, but as a whole, the album plays like another cautionary tale about the pitfalls of fame and fortune.

Solar Power marks the first time Lorde has traded in the cinematic arrangements that made Pure Heroine (2013) and Melodrama so palatable, for a more stripped down, sometimes hypnotizing, seemingly drowsy version of herself. Produced with her longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff, together they pull back a few too many layers, occasionally erasing Lorde’s signature bite from the equation. There are standout moments, like on “Secrets From a Girl (Who’s Seen It All)”, where a beautifully bizarre voiceover from Robyn, who plays the role of flight attendant, announces what’s in store when you reach your destination: sadness, equipped with yes, emotional baggage, that make you wonder what the track could have been had it not been dialed down. Lorde’s songwriting carries the album by combining revelation and wit to take us with her as she treks through self-discovery.

Four years spent unplugged (except, of course, for her secret Instagram account,) left Lorde with lots of time to interpret the world around her. On “Mood Ring” she pokes fun at wellness culture, “Ladies, begin your sun salutations / Transcendental in your meditations (Love and light) / You can burn sage, and I’ll cleanse the crystals” But, even if Lorde is in on the joke, when much of the rest of the album also reads like snippets from a Goop gift guide (with references to psychedelic garlands, and SPF 3000) it can be hard to tell where the joke ends. Regardless, her storytelling roots shine through on tracks like “Oceanic Feeling,” where she takes a dig at a past lover “I know a girl who knows another girl who knows the woman that you hurt / It’s strange to see you smoking marijuana / You used to do the most cocaine of anyone I’d ever met.” It is in moments like this, and on the quiet “Big Star,” with its lyrics like “I’ll still watch you run through the winter light / I used to love the party now I’m not alright / Hope the honey bees make it home tonight,” that Lorde really delivers her trademark bared emotion.

Former WWE Superstar CM Punk Debuts With AEW

CM Punk is back in pro wrestling.

But it isn’t with WWE.

Seven years after leaving WWE, Punk finally made his highly-anticipated return. He debuted on Friday night with AEW, bringing a rare presence to the company that is an equal blend of charisma and toughness.

Broadcast live on TNT, AEW Rampage opened with Living Colour’s “The Cult of Personality” blasting throughout the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, a song that has become synonymous with Punk. The response was electric, and Punk then cut a passionate promo in the ring. It felt as though Punk were speaking to old friends, reminiscing about his departure from Ring of Honor in 2005—which he described as the day he left professional wrestling—and officially declared this moment in AEW his return.

“I get excited about the prospect of me working with [Brian] Pillman [Jr.], [Powerhouse] Hobbs, Ricky Starks, Jungle Boy, Darby Allin, Jon Moxley–I’ve never worked a Jon Moxley before,” said Punk, speaking during a post-show press conference. “Literally, it’s everybody. I’ve never done anything with the Young Bucks. I’ve never stepped in the ring with Kenny Omega.

“I think there are so many dream matches, [which] is what people will call them, or dream situations, and who knows who else is coming… I’m excited to be here. I said it out there in the promo–I’m here for the fans, I’m here for me. I’m not a liar, I’m not going to lie–if you tell me this is going to be fun again, and I can go out there and have the time of my life, that’s the juice for me.”

During Rampage, Punk called out Darby Allin, who was watching beside Sting from the rafters, for a match on September 5 at the All Out pay per view back in Chicago.

“I want to backtrack to the first thing I did,” said Punk. “I hadn’t been in a ring for seven years, and the first thing I did was mention Britt Baker. This needs to be paid attention to. This is how you get talent over, this is how you help people. I think Britt’s great. I think everybody here’s great. If I could have name-dropped everyone here, I would have, but that popped into my head.

“The Darby thing was [Tony Khan’s] idea. I did a Twitter Q&A a year, a year-and-a-half ago, and [the question was], ‘Hey Punk, who do you see that you think you’d like to work with?’ It was all young guys that I saw potential in. Darby was one of them.”

Then, in a fashion perfectly fitting Punk, he exited his promo on Rampage by expressing his gratitude to the crowd, offering free ice cream bars as people left the venue at the end of the night.

“These ice cream bars, to me, represent an idea, an idea that was gift-wrapped to people that didn’t bother to take the time to try to understand their audience,” said Punk. “This is the easiest home run I’ve ever hit, and this is a legit thank-you. Jon Lester came to the Chicago Cubs and won us a World Series. When he got traded away, he opened up a tab at a bunch of bars as a way to say thank you to the fans. This is my way to say thank you to the fans.”

Punk—who is 42-year-old Phil Brooks—remains a unique entity in pro wrestling. He was an indie wrestling icon before elevating himself to a whole new tier of stardom in WWE. His promos are some of the most compelling in the history of the industry, with his “Pipe Bomb” promo from June 2011 standing the test time as a signature moment of Monday Night Raw.

Punk left WWE under especially acrimonious terms in 2014, which he attributed to legitimate concerns over his health. His termination was particularly galling, as he was fired in 2014 on his wedding day. Vince McMahon later publicly apologized for the poor timing during an interview with Steve Austin on the WWE Network, but the damage between the two parties was irrevocable. His relationship with WWE was further derailed after a tension-filled lawsuit in 2018, where a jury ruled in his favor in a defamation lawsuit filed by WWE doctor Chris Amann.

That lawsuit centered around Punk’s criticism of his WWE medical treatment, which he spoke of during a 2014 podcast with Colt Cabana. To say that the Punk/Cabana podcast went viral would be an understatement, as it was an interview that reverberated throughout the entire industry. It made sense that Punk did the interview with Cabana considering their long-standing friendship. That took a turn, however, in 2018, as Cabana sued Punk for legal fees stemming from the defamation suit. This was settled out of court, and has appeared to put an end to any type of positive rapport between Punk and Cabana. Interestingly, Cabana is also part of the AEW roster.

In his time away from pro wrestling, Punk competed in mixed martial arts, fighting for the UFC on two different occasions. He also dabbled in writing and acting, all while an overwhelming amount of wrestling fans impatiently chanted his name and demanded his return. He briefly returned to WWE programming in November of 2019 as part of the WWE Backstage show, where he was contracted through Fox and not WWE. Punk now has the potential to be a massive star for AEW, allowing the company to reach an even wider audience as it seeks to assert itself in a terrain long controlled by WWE.

Punk’s AEW debut took place a night before SummerSlam, a signature event for WWE. While parties from both sides often contend that WWE and AEW are not in direct competition, there is no mistaking that WWE officials are well aware that the Punk appearance takes headlines away from their weekend, while AEW is ecstatic to be the top overall story in a weekend traditionally dominated by WWE.

“Timing is everything,” said Punk. “It felt right. When I was sick and tired and hurt [in WWE], and I realized that these people wouldn’t care if I died today—there would be another show tomorrow. I knew I had to remove myself from the situation. I didn’t know how long it was going to take for me to heal. Then this came along, and credit to everyone in AEW. It reminded me of places I used to work that I loved, where it was more about the spirit of the thing. This, instead of feeling like a house, it felt like a home.”

The future of wrestling has changed its direction. AEW’s newest acquisition helps place them on equal footing with WWE in terms of storylines, and, perhaps soon, ratings, as CM Punk is now All Elite.

Kylie Jenner is pregnant, expecting baby No. 2 with Travis Scott

Kylie Jenner is going to be a mom again!

The 24-year-old billionaire is pregnant and expecting her second child with on-again, off-again love Travis Scott, multiple sources exclusively confirm to Page Six.

The pair already share 3-year-old daughter Stormi, and Jenner has been open about wanting a sibling for their little girl.

A source said the entire family is “thrilled.”

The news came after Caitlyn Jenner sparked speculation Thursday by announcing that she is expecting another grandchild, but it turned out to be about her son Burt Jenner, who is expecting his third baby with girlfriend Valerie Pitalo.

When asked about having a sibling for Stormi during an interview for Harper’s Bazaar’s March 2020 issue, the makeup guru revealed: “My friends all pressure me about it … They love Stormi. I definitely feel pressure to give her a sibling, but there’s no plan.”

And while appearing on her BFF Stassie Karanikolaou’s #DoYourPart Instagram Live series, Kylie added: “I want seven kids down the line, but not right now.

“Pregnancy is just not a joke; it’s a serious thing and it’s hard,” she added. “I’m not ready for that just yet.”

Kylie, who started dating Scott in April 2017, spent her first pregnancy in hiding, announcing Stormi’s arrival only after she had given birth.

She later reasoned to Andy Cohen: “I shared so much of my life. I was also really young when I got pregnant, and it was just a lot for me personally. I didn’t know how I would bring that to the public too and have everyone’s opinion. I think it was just something that I needed to go through by myself.”

Her sister Kendall Jenner agreed: “This is obviously a theory — I’ve never been pregnant, and I’m sure there’s studies on this — but I think that the more at peace you are when you are pregnant, that goes into your child.

“I think it’s a reflection of even her daughter today, and how amazing and beautiful she is, is just because Kylie was so at peace in her pregnancy. I really do think it was the best decision.”

Big sister Kim Kardashian — who has four kids with estranged husband Kanye West — explained that Kylie did not leave the house in order to protect herself and her baby-to-be.

“There were times when we would be driving and pregnant, and paparazzi would almost crash into our cars because they just wanted a picture,” Kim, 40, said. “Kylie really wanted to, I think, protect her safety, the baby, and have that just be a private moment.”

Even while staying at home for months, Kylie said she was bothered by paparazzi, revealing: “I stayed in my house and around my neighborhood. Then, toward the end, there would be helicopters every day — I couldn’t even go outside because they’d be shooting all my deliveries.”

The youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan first sparked rumors of a pregnancy this summer as she stepped out in a extremely baggy shirt while in Idaho.

Jenner also shared a picture of her sushi order, which appeared to be all avocado rolls instead of any raw fish.

Fans immediately picked up it, with one tweeting: “Kylie eating sushi without fish… she’s pregnant.”

Seemingly wanting to make a bid to throw her fans off track, Kylie then posted a photo of a cocktail on her Instagram Stories, writing: “Nothing like a lychee martini” followed by a photo of raw fish ceviche.

However, as one source pointed out: “But is she actually consuming it?”

This New 'Jeopardy!' Host Has Already Resigned: Who Is Mike Richards

 AILSA CHANG, HOST:

If this were Jeopardy, we might start with an answer like, this man quit one of the highest-profile jobs in TV after about a week. The question - who is Mike Richards? Mike Richards was the new host of the popular quiz show "Jeopardy!" But today he announced that he would step down, though for now it seems he will remain as executive producer. All of this comes after reporting from The Ringer, which revealed sexist and offensive comments that Richards had made while hosting a podcast years ago. In one exchange, he used a demeaning term for a co-host who once worked as a model at a trade convention.

(SOUNDBITE OF PODCAST, "THE RANDUMB SHOW")

MIKE RICHARDS: Beth got a job being - what was it? - a booth hoe.

BETH TRIFFON: I don't think...

RICHARDS: Yeah.

TRIFFON: ...They use the word hoe for that.

CHANG: Well, here to talk through the "Jeopardy!" controversy is NPR TV critic Eric Deggans. Hey, Eric.

ERIC DEGGANS, BYLINE: Hi.

CHANG: All right. So Richards was just named the new host last week, which was already a controversy in itself - right? - because he was also the show's executive producer and appeared to basically pick himself. So why did he decide to step down now?

DEGGANS: Well, I think the core of this is the question of whether Richards has a problem with sexism. So when news first broke weeks ago that he was the leading candidate for this job, you know, reporters noted that when he was executive producer of "The Price Is Right," the show had some lawsuits from models who said that they were treated unfairly when they got pregnant. And The Ringer story revealed several instances where Richards spoke on the podcast about women with this sort of casual sexism that seemed similar to some of the concerns raised in those lawsuits.

Now, when news of the lawsuits broke, Richards said the allegations don't reflect the reality of who he was. But that's a tougher case to make now. And in his memo to the staff today, you know, Richards acknowledged that moving forward as host might be too much of a distraction for the show.

CHANG: I mean, Jeopardy knew that they were replacing an icon in Alex Trebek. So how did their selection process miss this, you think?

DEGGANS: Well, I think they underestimated how much the wider world, especially people who don't regularly watch the show, would scrutinize the choice they were going to make. And they weren't that transparent about this selection process that might not have been as even-handed as they tried to make it look. You know, Jeopardy spent a lot of time showcasing all these guest hosts, and some of them looked like candidates for the main job, including a public favorite, LeVar Burton. They even hired one of them, Mayim Bialik, to host primetime specials.

So when the daily job went to the executive producer, this middle-aged white guy with these controversies in his past, it kind of looked like the fix was in from the beginning. And it also looked like the show's distributor, Sony Pictures Television, hadn't really bothered to vet a guy who was taking over one of the biggest and most venerated game show franchises on television. Now "Jeopardy!" is trying to find a successor for Trebek, who had this reputation for being fair, humble, down to earth. And selecting a new host with all these ethical questions in a process that seemed kind of rushed and not that fair - that is not a good look.

CHANG: I mean, exactly. But how do you think the show moves forward after something like this? I mean, can Mike Richards just go back to being the show's executive producer?

DEGGANS: Well, I'm going to be honest. I'm a showbiz cynic, right? So I think Richards might end up quietly exiting the show after the dust settles. But if he's too distracting as the host, it seems likely that he might have the same problem as executive producer. But he taped five episodes as host yesterday, which the show says they're going to air as scheduled. And Sony released a statement saying they weren't aware of this earlier podcast, and they've spoken to him about what they expect from him going forward.

Now, in his note to staff, Richards said that the search for a guest host would resume, and they would tape new episodes with a roster of guest hosts that they're going to unveil next week. Ultimately, this situation might be a good example of how, in today's times, if you've got a tangible record of sexism in your past, you can't just ignore it like nothing happened because people are going to hold you accountable.
