Eleven-plan around Sancho goes wrong! Southgate experiences bitter deja vu

England and the penalty shoot-out - it remains an unhappy relationship. Even a trick by national coach Gareth Southgate could not prevent the dramatic defeat in the European Championship final against Italy 2:3 i.E. (1:1, 0:1). Quite the opposite.

In the 120th minute, Southgate substituted Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, two fresh players especially for the penalty shoot-out. But the plan was anything but worked.

First, Rashford as the third shooter at the score of 2:2 put the ball at the post after a bizarre attempt, then followed the appearance of Jadon Sancho. The still BVB professional also failed the nerves, he failed with a short attempt and a weak attempt to Italy's keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Particularly bitter: Southgate missed the decisive penalty in the legendary European Championship semi-final against Germany in 1996, 25 years later his trick with Rashford and Sancho did not work.

Kramer criticises Southgate's decision

"Rashford and Sancho are at the top of their reputation and self-image. Southgate left them aside a bit throughout the tournament. You're also very young and then you tell them in the final: 'You both are only coming for the penalty shoot-out and please put the ball in.' It's psychologically very, very difficult," said Gladbach professional Christoph Kramer on ZDF and continued: "They don't have a good feeling anyway, because they could hardly help the team in the entire tournament and were not important."

Bukayo Saka then missed the decisive fifth penalty against Italy. The Arsenal YOUNGSTER was also substituted ...
